چکیده

The RSL continues to evolve and two faculty recruitments are in progress for molecular imaging and cognitive neuroimaging. These are major initiatives for the Department and the Lab. Molecular imaging is broadly defined as the visualization of in vivo structures that are identified on the molecular level by genetic expression or some other tagging means. The NIH has recently highlighted this field as a major growth area. Dr. Mark Bednarski has accepted the position as Assistant Professor (Research). This appointment will begin June 1, 2000. The cognitive neuroimaging position has evolved from the burgeoning collaborations between RSL and others within the Center and the neuroscience community, and the desire to provide transitions of the functional brain mapping technology to clinical applications. We are enthusiastic to find the right person who will join our team and lead this effort. The faculty and students continue to distinguish themselves in numerous ways. The faculty are frequently invited to serve as consultants to government and foundation agencies and in policy-making positions for international scientific societies. Norbert Pelc was recently elected to the Board of Trustees of the 5500-member International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), also serving on the society’s Education Committee and Young Investigator Subcommittee. He was invited to give a prestigious plenary lecture at the ISMRM’s 1999 annual meeting in Philadelphia. In addition, he serves on the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Whitaker Foundation. He also is chair of the Stanford Animal Care and Use Panel. Sandy Napel served on the steering committee for the workshop “Medicine Meets Virtual Reality at Stanford” in January 1999 and gave an invited talk. In April 1999 he was an invited speaker at an NIH workshop (sponsored by NCI/Office of Women’s Health) entitled: “Joint Working Group on Image-Guided Diagnosis and Treatment”. Such workshops are utilized by the NIH to steer their priorities and set policies. In addition, Christopher Beaulieu/Sandy’s paper entitled: “Multidetector Spiral CT: Maintaining Image Quality with Rapid Acquisition” won a cum laude award at the RSNA meeting. A percepção dos usuários sobre a utilização da análise de sentimentos como apoio à seleção de notícias

Everyday, readers are bombarded with various types of news (positive or negative) without having the chance to choose what they want to read. In this paper we investigate the use of sentiment analysis to support the user in the content selection. We present Magnet News, a Web tool where readers can choose the polarity of the news they want to read. In this scenario we use the Underlying Discour...

Determinants and permanents of Hessenberg matrices and generalized Lucas polynomials

In this paper, we give some determinantal and permanental representations of generalized Lucas polynomials, which are a general form of generalized bivariate Lucas p-polynomials, ordinary Lucas and Perrin sequences etc., by using various Hessenberg matrices. In addition, we show that determinant and permanent of these Hessenberg matrices can be obtained by using combinations. Then we show, the ...

On the Properties of Balancing and Lucas-Balancing $p$-Numbers

The main goal of this paper is to develop a new generalization of balancing and Lucas-balancing sequences namely balancing and Lucas-balancing $p$-numbers and derive several identities related to them. Some combinatorial forms of these numbers are also presented.

Everything in Moderation 1 Everything in Moderation: A case for the balanced moderation of user-generated content on news sites

Moderation of user-generated content on news Web sites is an increasingly relevant and pertinent topic for online news entities. The quality and quantity of user-generated content can either help or hinder the number of audience members a news outlet receives. Considerations such as the amount of resources that can be given to moderation, the types of moderation, the types of usergenerated cont...

The (non-)existence of perfect codes in Lucas cubes

A Fibonacci string of length $n$ is a binary string $b = b_1b_2ldots b_n$ in which for every $1 leq i < n$, $b_icdot b_{i+1} = 0$. In other words, a Fibonacci string is a binary string without 11 as a substring. Similarly, a Lucas string is a Fibonacci string $b_1b_2ldots b_n$ that $b_1cdot b_n = 0$. For a natural number $ngeq1$, a Fibonacci cube of dimension $n$ is denoted by $Gamma_n$ and i...

DAnIEL: Language Independent Character-Based News Surveillance

This study aims at developing a news surveillance system able to address multilingual web corpora. As an example of a domain where multilingual capacity is crucial, we focus on Epidemic Surveillance. This task necessitates worldwide coverage of news in order to detect new events as quickly as possible, anywhere, whatever the language it is rst reported in. In this study, text-genre is used rath...
